It is merely on become so it starts to fall apart, although smack-right up finale rescues it throughout the ‘red’. Excellently staged and you may intelligently dialogued, it will have zero great issue in traditions down the very unsightly identity.” [ 8 ]

New film’s copywriter and you may movie director, Robert Rossen, sets up a beneficial multidimensional chess games, having mortal stakes, ranging from Johnny, their manager (Thomas Gomez), his boss’s spouse (Ellen Drew), an effective cagey police inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and you can a scuffling celebrity (Evelyn Keyes) whoever brother (Nina Foch) spent some time working within gambling enterprise and you can dated good corrupt detective (Jim Bannon). This new caustically epigrammatic program, the fresh cast’s suavely managed body language out of like and menace, and you may Rossen’s thrillingly controlled and smartly assertive photo (as well as their political conscience) get this to pugnacious but really intricate spectacle a low profile antique of genre.” [ ten ]

Ace performances by Manhood Powell, once the a gaming house overseer, and you can Lee J. Cobb, once the a police inspector, and within the rating . Although the plot observe a familiar development, the fresh new characterizations try fresh and shows suitable to help you overbalance. Dialog was terse and you can topical, steering clear of the sentimental, phoney touch. Unusual digital camera basics come-along on occasion in order to heighten attention and you will temporarily arrest the eye. Strong teamplay from the Robert Rossen, doubling because the manager-scripter, and you may Milton Holmes, original journalist and you will associate manufacturer, along with supports making this a delicate development.” [ eleven ]

It is generally a matter of watching Mr. Powell read his paces smartly if you find yourself a huge cast of actors and performers render him classic support. Evelyn Keyes performs the good absolutely nothing woman which brings forth the fresh finest in your and Ellen Received is the sleek and you can slinky vixen who gets your for the jams. Thomas Gomez is actually oily because the villain and you will Lee J. Cobb really does an alternative ready concert tour since a tired cops inspector who eventually closes the case. A lot of drinking and you can smoking is done by the all the alarmed.” [ several ]
